1930’s and 1940’s Hollywood Fashion and Glamour

I’m in love with fashion; I’m in love with the classic styles, I’m in love with glamour…

While watching The Devil Wears Prada last week (for the thousandths time), I was reminded that fashion is a real industry with millions of employees worldwide; from the designers to the fashion magazines to the models, photographers and seamstresses, to warehouse employees to dept. Store employees and beyond. When I think of fashion in this way, it no longer seems vain or shallow; it becomes an essential and thriving part of the world economy.

When I was a tween I fell in love with musical films; they seemed so magical to me. All of the beautiful costumes and choreography. The elegantly dressed people, the dinner clubs where singers and dancers entertained people. I was in love with an era I would never live in.

When I turned 15 years old, I was fortunate enough to have many friends that were having Quinceañera parties. I finally had a chance to really dress up! My mother was a wonderful seamstress and like many women of her day was able to copy patterns and easily maker them for me. I would see a picture of a dress in Vogue, and if the pattern didn’t exist, she would create the pattern and the dress. My mother did a lot of sewing for about a This was the late seventies, so there was already a trend to dress up on Saturday night. (disco era)

I’m so delighted to see this trend come back. We’re wearing faux fur, sequence, satin, velvet, and silk shantung again! You see all of the low back dresses with mini trains on the red carpet. Could it be that Hollywood has gone back to glam?

Now we need some of those fabulous dinner clubs back, somewhere to go on Saturday night where you can have dinner, see a show and dance! I’m sure they still exist somewhere, just not in my small part of the world.

What is your favorite fashion decade? What is your favorite style of dress? How do you feel about fashion? Is it just something to wear or something that makes you feel good?

Please leave comments below; I would love to hear from you.
